Other Bypass Relays etc.

1-way, changeover relay and 3-way and 4-way bypass relays employ miniature relays to switch trailer lamps on and off. Connection is made to the vehicle?s lamp circuits but only for the purpose of energising the coils of the relays. The current drawn by each relay is less than 40 milliamps (0.04amps). This current is so small that it cannot be detected by bulb failure sensors in most vehicles.

These simple relays have been largely superseded by more sophisticated bypass relays with much lower current draws.

Also shown here are the fog-cut-out relay and the reverse (parking) sensor cut out relay.

Single bypass/ change over relay

A single relay for a single circuit with normally open and normally closed outputs - can be used both to switch on and to switch off. Coil current only 38mA.

Three-way bulb failure bypass

A small double relay for switching two or three circuits, such as trailer lights. It takes less than 40 milliamps from each vehicle light circuit to switch. Power to supply the trailer lights is drawn from the vehicle battery or fusebox.

12V Flasher bypass relay with built in buzzer

A small 12V double relay with a built in buzzer for powering trailer or caravan indicator lights. It takes less than 40 milliamps from each vehicle light circuit to switch. Power to supply the trailer lights is drawn from the vehicle battery or fusebox.

Fog Cut Out relay

This relay fits in line in the vehicle's rear fog light circuit and switches off the vehicle fog light(s) when a trailer is connected.

Parking distance sensor cut-out relay

Fits in line in the rear parking distance sensor circuit and switches off the sensor buzzer when a trailer is connected. It is not usually suitable for vehicles with factory-fitted parking sensors (Typically, these have the buzzer under the dash)
